Privacy Notice

1. Who we are

Grade Boundaries Explorer (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an open-access educational website located at gradeboundaries.com. The site is maintained as a hobby project by the open-source contributors Fire-Frog-Fuel and ChessMastermind.

For the purposes of both the EU GDPR and the UK GDPR we act as the data controller for any personal data processed on or through this site.

We do not maintain an establishment in the United Kingdom. Because we process only minimal, non-identifying data on an occasional basis, we rely on the exemption in Article 27 (2)(a) UK GDPR and have not appointed a UK representative.

2. Data we collect & purposes

  • Traffic statistics (aggregated) – We use both GoatCounter and Plausible Analytics to understand how the site is used overall (e.g. page views and referrers). Neither service collects personally identifying information, stores raw IP addresses, or sets tracking cookies.
  • Theme preference – When you toggle between dark and light mode we store that preference in your browser’s localStorage. The value never leaves your device and can be cleared at any time.
  • Error logs and security – Our hosting provider may record short-lived server logs (IP address, user-agent, timestamp) solely to detect and block abuse.

3. Legal basis for processing

We process the minimal data described above on the basis of our legitimate interest (Art. 6 (1)(f) EU/UK GDPR) in providing a free public-interest educational resource and protecting it from abuse.

4. Analytics: GoatCounter & Plausible

We employ two privacy-focused analytics platforms:

  • GoatCounter is a privacy-friendly analytics tool that collects only aggregated statistics (page views, referrers) and does not record any personal identifiers or set cookies. All processing occurs without storing raw IP addresses. See GoatCounter’s privacy policy for details.
  • Plausible Analytics is a European, open-source, cookie-free analytics platform. It collects only aggregated traffic data and does not store raw IP addresses or set tracking cookies. All data are processed and stored within the European Economic Area under a signed Data-Processing Agreement. See Plausible’s data policy for details.

5. Cookies & local storage

We do not set advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. The site uses only:

  • theme (localStorage) – remembers your dark/light preference. Under UK PECR and most EU guidance this is considered strictly necessary because it fulfils a user-requested function, so no consent banner is required.

6. Third-party resources & international transfers

We load static libraries (TailwindCSS, jQuery, DataTables, Chart.js) from public Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) such as cdn.jsdelivr.net and code.jquery.com. When your browser requests these files, your IP address and basic headers are transferred to the nearest edge node, which may be outside the EU/EEA or the UK, including in the United States.

These transfers are covered by Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards provided by the CDN operators.

7. Data retention

Aggregated analytics data are retained by GoatCounter and Plausible for 24 months and then automatically deleted. Server logs are typically deleted within 7 days unless required for security investigations. We do not store any other personal data.

8. Your rights

Depending on whether you are in the EU/EEA or the UK, you have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, as well as the right to data portability and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

EU/EEA residents can complain to their local Data Protection Authority; UK residents to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). If we hold no data that can identify you, we will simply confirm that fact.

10. Changes to this notice
